The second-floor hallway was dark and desolate until Cinderella walked to the window and opened the heavy drapes, letting in a flood of morning sunlight. She stepped up to the first of three closed doors, hesitated for a moment, took a deep breath, and opened it. In the darkness of her stepmother’s bedroom Cinderella could hardly see the elaborate round cat bed where a fat black cat was sleeping.

“Here, kitty, kitty,” Cinderella called softly from the doorway.

The cat slowly climbed to his feet, yawned, stretched, and gave Cinderella a disdainful look before turning his back and lying down again.

Dear George,

The new accounting procedure you outlined last month doesn’t work well for us. There are too many transactions and the transactions are all quite complex. Your system is giving us more problems than we had before.

Is it possible for you to either explain the new system again, or to allow us to go back to the old way of doing things?

「謝謝各位的到來」，這句話最常出現在英文簡報的第一句。 這麼簡單的開場白，原來也會說錯！簡報開場白，以下這三句都不對：
（X）Thank you for your coming.
（X）Thank you for your joining.
（X）Thank you for your attending.

中文「謝謝您的參與」、「謝謝您的到來」、「謝謝您的出席」，都很正常，但coming/joining之前加了一個your，就顯得拗口，老外不會這麼說，但他們發現，這種說法在日本、中國和台灣特別流行。

A beam of golden sunshine fell across Cinderella’s bed as two bluebirds fell in through her open window.

“Cinderella,” one bluebird chirped.

Cinderella sighed and rolled over, pulling a pillow over her head as she burrowed deeper under the covers.

Once upon a time in a faraway land there was a tiny kingdom that was peaceful, prosperous, and rich in romance and tradition. There, in a stately chateau, lived a widowed gentleman with his little daughter, Cinderella. A kind and devoted father, he gave his beloved child every luxury and comfort. Still, he felt she needed a mother’s care, and so he married again. For his second wife he chose a woman of a good family with two daughters just Cinderella’s age: by name, Anastasia and Drizella.

It was upon the untimely death of this good man, however, that the stepmother’s true nature was revealed – cold, cruel, and bitterly jealous of Cinderella’s charm and beauty. She was grimly determined to forward the interests of her own two awkward daughters.
